Spillwords published a short story of mine. The Death of Art. I like Spillwords because it’s WordPress’s magazine, with an editor. So, it’s connected to WP while being its own entity. The story, if you haven’t read it already, is a mix between Stream of Consciousness (James Joyce, Proust, and others) and Edgar Allen Poe’s Single Effect Theory. It’s a horror story…maybe. I tend to like implementing multiple themes. It’s not an easy thing to do. The story is not long. It would qualify as Flash Fiction, which is perfect for the internet. Whoa–it’s so good, and so well-written, and SO disturbing! (You had me at “Proust,” by the way.)
I have a bizarre fascination with murderers, serial killers, etc.–just because I’m trying to understand why they do what they do, and HOW they could get themselves to do it. And why do most of them seem to have elaborate patterns that are unique to them? What the hell are they thinking?
But what you’ve done is a fascinating take on trying to see what’s going on in that kind of mind. Why the “art”?
I swear I’ve seen those “outlines” myself, and they looked just as you describe. Except I wasn’t killing anyone at the time. 🙂

Thanks Nancy. I too wonder about serial killers and their motives. The “art” is a secondary (or more) theme to the piece. The serial killer is killing the artist, who then becomes the artist themself. Sort of a copycat of themself, but, then they are already dead? Or are they? Or we tend to think of violence/murder in terms of art, like “the art of war”. There’s more to it, but that’s a little bit of what I was aiming for. Take care!
