The First Real Rain

There is a crispness to clear cool fall days.

The leaves... wait for the first real rain.

Chestnuts, who fall first, appear like

Pebbles on the streets, eventually smashed

Into an orange/brown bumpy pulp pavement.

A stubborn rhododendron flower lingers

Hidden beneath summer cooked foliage

Hops a ride, sticking to the bottom of a shoe.

When the first real rain hits, there’s a warmth

Not as in heat or the first pinch of spring

More like putting on a coat, and the clouds

Come down to street level to mingle with

Pedestrians who have changed their gait

From brisk strides, bright postures, & loud talk

To walking with arms bundled tight, close

To their sides, sometimes crossed, heads bent

Under the slight heaviness of hats & hoods

In a silence which weighs nothing at all.

Fantastic poem! Loved the lines ‘A stubborn rhododendron flower lingers/Hidden beneath summer cooked foliage’. Reminded me of my old home in the countryside and walking through the woods on a crisp autumn day.

    Thanks for sharing!

I always like sunny days, but I fell in love with your THE FIRST REAL RAIN and the image (that is coincidently similar to a photo I shot on a rainy day 🙂 )….

Was the poem inspired by the image? Or, was the image found to resonate with the poem? In either way, it’s beautiful to me. Thank you for sharing.

Hi! And thanks. I found the image after I wrote the poem. I usually have about three to decide upon after whittling down from my collection of images.

Love the image – A reflection on shimmering ice ?

This year, ( UK) the rain rarely stopped.

Then, at last, my favourute weather – white frosts.

No, the shimmering is the shore of a river, The Clackamas. I’m a rain lover, especially after a long dry spell. We haven’t had much in the way of frost as of yet, but it has been snowing a lot in the mountains, which are only a half hour drive away. Thanks! Take care!
